The Artist
A striking 1982 Swedish portrait with a wonderfully uncompromising presence. The sitter, in a black beret and oversized glasses, is rendered in dense, rhythmic strokes of ochre, rose, charcoal and grey, his sharply observed face set against a richly patterned interior. The brushwork is vigorous and almost mosaic-like, giving both the figure and his surroundings a remarkable sense of texture and movement. Particularly good are the little clues to a creative life, the row of brushes, patterned vessel and decorative objects behind him, making this feel as much a portrait of an artist’s world as of the man himself.
The artist died in 1995.
Keep out of direct sunlight and gently dust with a soft cloth.
