A wonderfully atmospheric Swedish seascape built almost entirely from shades of blue, grey and chalky white. The low horizon gives the sea real presence, with layers of restless waves picked out in thick, textural strokes of foam beneath a broad, hazy sky. There’s a lovely austerity to it, no coastline, no figures, nothing to interrupt that endless meeting of water and sky. Moody without being gloomy, and beautifully offset by the warmth of its original gilt frame. From 1925.
