The Joy, 1976

A fantastic midcentury abstract, from 1976 and painted with wonderfully gutsy, almost sculptural strokes of thick impasto. Saturated orange, cobalt, turquoise, olive and flashes of pink collide with inky blacks and browns, while a looser passage of silvery grey along the bottom gives the composition room to breathe. There’s a brilliant push and pull between chaos and control here, energetic and instinctive, but with a strong underlying structure. The visible ridges and sweeps of the brush make it particularly good up close. Bold, joyful and just the right amount of unruly, presented in a slim gilt frame.

Keep out of direct sunlight and gently dust with a soft cloth.
