The Patchwork Mountain
A wonderfully textural 1961 Swedish landscape hovering somewhere between abstraction and observation. The scene is built up in thick, almost sculptural passages of paint, with chalky whites, slate greys and deep greens punctuated by flashes of rust, turquoise and brilliant orange. Buildings and landscape seem to dissolve into one another, giving the work a patchwork quality that feels distinctly modernist without losing its sense of place. The heavy impasto is particularly good here; up close it’s all paint, texture and gesture; from a distance, an entire landscape quietly comes together. The frame is noteworthy as well.
Keep out of direct sunlight and gently dust with a soft cloth.
