The Seated Woman, 1959
A wonderful Swedish midcentury 1959 portrait that transforms the figure into a patchwork of angular planes with beautifully restrained colour. Olive, moss, ochre and deep teal shape the sitter against a fractured geometric background, while small flashes of pink and yellow keep the composition from becoming too austere. There are clear echoes of Cubism in the faceted construction of the face and body, but the painting retains a softness and intimacy; the bowed head feels quiet, absorbed, almost private. A particularly great example of late-1950s modernism, made even better by its original, gently worn wooden frame.
Keep out of direct sunlight and gently dust with a soft cloth.
