The Tulips, 1953

A striking Swedish midcentury floral still life, painted in 1953, in which two pink roses are reduced to a series of angular, almost faceted forms. Against a wonderful dusty blue ground, the flowers, leaves and vase are constructed through blocks of muted rose, sage, olive and earthy brown, outlined with strong dark lines. There’s a lovely tension between the softness of the subject and the painting’s distinctly geometric treatment, giving something as familiar as a vase of flowers a decidedly modern edge. Particularly good in its tall, narrow format....graphic, decorative and full of character.

Keep out of direct sunlight and gently dust with a soft cloth.
