The Window, 1950

Wonderfully reminiscient of David Hockney's series, "Window", here is a 1950 Swedish oil composed of a midcentury interior scene, where a simple vase of flowers on the table opens onto a working waterfront beyond. The artist moves easily between still life and landscape, using the window almost as a painting within the painting: a crane, water and distant industrial forms rendered in loose, economical strokes. Muted greens, plum, coral and slate blue give the piece a particularly good palette, while the flashes of pink flowers soften the more graphic geometry. It has that lovely feeling of domestic life meeting the world outside; intimate, unfussy and full of atmosphere.

Keep out of direct sunlight and gently dust with a soft cloth.
