The Woodland

A quietly atmospheric woodland scene, from Midcentury Sweden, painted with a beautifully muted palette of sage, moss, soft blue and earthy rust. Tall, slender trunks create a strong vertical rhythm through the composition, while the looser handling of the distant foliage gives the forest a wonderful sense of depth and hazy light. There’s something distinctly Scandinavian in its restraint, observed rather than romanticised, with colour doing much of the emotional work. The aged, textural gilt frame is especially good here, adding warmth and a little grandeur to an otherwise wonderfully understated painting.

Keep out of direct sunlight and gently dust with a soft cloth.
